Over and Under the Salish Sea by Artist Mona T. Smiley Fairbanks

From May 26 through July 28, the Edmonds Arts Festival presents Over and Under the Salish Sea, a powerful new collection by Edmonds-based artist Mona T. Smiley Fairbanks. Her vibrant acrylic paintings invite viewers to imagine what exists just beneath the water’s surface and to reflect on the unseen life along our coastline.

About the Artist

Mona T. Smiley Fairbanks is a Pacific Northwest native known for her wide-ranging talents as a painter, monotype printmaker, fiber artist, metalworker, and filmmaker. Born and raised in North Seattle, Mona began her creative career as a graphic designer at Nordstrom. After a decade in the corporate world, she shifted focus to raise her family in Edmonds and to expand her artistic practice across new mediums.

Mona finds deep inspiration in the water, plants, and wildlife of the Puget Sound region. Her work often explores themes of environmental awareness, natural beauty, and endangered species, capturing the patterns and colors that define this unique ecosystem.

A Lifelong Commitment to Art and Community

Mona’s influence on the Edmonds art scene is hard to miss. She has led numerous public art installations, including bright sea stars displayed at the Frances Anderson Center and a striking mural of rockfish in downtown Edmonds. As a long-time participant in the Edmonds Art Studio Tour, she regularly welcomes the community into her workspace to experience the creative process.

In addition to her personal work, Mona has supported arts education in Edmonds and Shoreline schools for over 25 years. Through grant-funded programs and curriculum collaboration, she has helped young people connect with the environment through art.

Join Us for the Reception

A public reception for Over and Under the Salish Sea will be held on June 19, 2025 from 5-8pm, where guests can meet Mona, explore her creative inspirations, and learn more about her artistic journey.
