Artist and sculptor Pamela Mummy in her studio

Pamela Mummy in her studio

To honor the life and work of the exceptional Edmonds artist Pamela Mummy, a representation of her vast collection is on loan from her family and on exhibit in the Arts Festival Gallery February 4 through 28.

Pamela’s art reflects her love of the Renaissance. With a classical approach, an emphasis on the beautiful and a passion for figurative is expressed through her mastery of painting, drawing, and sculpture. The Golden Rectangle, considered since the Renaissance as perfect visual balance, is often acknowledged and is used as the foundation of her paintings. Hidden objects and words are often secretly nested in her sculptures and paintings, reflecting her affection for intrigue. As an artist, the process of transforming clay into a refined, polished piece of art was fascinating to her and expressed through her series “Vases with Faces;” lidded containers are adorned with expressive faces on each.

Demonstrating artistic dedication, Mummy spent six months creating a giant chess set filled with the faces of her friends and random strangers she met, exemplified by the black queen piece based on a waitress who once served her. When Pamela asked the woman’s permission to photograph her “she quickly gave this sensual, manipulative look, and so that is who she became” Pamela stated. Each piece is made from glazed ceramic and is part of a collection called “Toys, Tales and You Don’t Know Jack.”

In addition to Pamela’s amazing and prolific artistic talents, she was known for having a bright, playful spirit. A dedicated artist, Pamela consistently created art 8 hours a day and was a multiple award winner until the end of her life in August 2018.

The Arts Festival Gallery is presented to visitors by the Edmonds Arts Festival Foundation and is located in the Frances Anderson Center, downtown Edmonds. Hours are Monday-Friday, 9am-7pm, and Saturday, 10am-1pm.
